There's great news for North Carolina's Outer Banks. Highway 12, closed since Hurricane Irene blew threw the area in late August, has reopened. Irene actually created a new inlet and washed out sections of road near Rodanthe. Late Monday, workers finished a 662-foot steel bridge over the inlet, connecting Hatteras Island with the rest of the mainland.
The North Carolina department of roads considers the fix temporary until they can develop a long-term strategy on how to handle damage caused by storms that hit the Outer Banks.
A ferry service had bee transporting residents between Rodanthe and Stumpy point since Irene.
