Parents: Track Santa No Matter Where You're at this Christmas

Maybe Santa will need a nice
ski vacation rental after the Holidays?

If you're staying at a vacation rental over the weekend, your kids might be a little worried whether or not Santa can find them. But you can reassure the little ones with NORAD's Santa Tracker

Parents will also find answers to difficult questions such as:
  • How can Santa travel the world within 24 hours? (Santa does not experience time the way we do--24 hours to us is like a month to Santa);
  • How old is Santa? (At least 16 centuries old);
  • What route does Santa Travel? (He starts at the International Date Line in the Pacific Ocean and travels west).
NORAD knows a thing or two about things that fly. It safeguards the skies of North America and is a joint US-Canadian operation. And, as we know, Canada is pretty close to the North Pole!

Here's a video of Santa's progress from last Christmas:

Travel Trends for 2012

Stay at this private water's edge home for just $150/night

It looks like 2012 will hold opportunity for vacation rentals. However, like any other year in the travel business, there'll be plenty of competition for vacationers.

Trip Advisor released a 2012 survey that said 79% of respondents plan on spending at least $3,000 on vacations in 2012, while 21% plan on spending $10,000 or more. Cultural trips will likely increase, as will international travel to Paris, London and Rome. Stateside, the most popular cities are expected to be Las Vegas, New York City and San Francisco, but beach vacations such as Island escapes will continue to be popular. Cultural trips are expected to increase, so if your vacation rental is near a cultural attraction, you may want to update your listing with new or enhanced details. Of course, including more photos of attractions in your area will help you compete with hotels and resorts.

Vacation rentals themselves are increasing in popularity as consumers continue to look for value. According to, hotels will be getting more facelifts in 2012, which will increase the pressure on vacation rentals to stay updated in both decor and amenities.

Great New Year's Eve Destinations

Relax by a warm Key West Pool on New Year's Eve
Still looking for a place to celebrate New Year’s Eve? Try a vacation rental. If you’re looking to save money, there are lots of options in resort communities that are in their off season. Or, if you’re looking for something more elaborate, try romantic and exciting locations such as Paris, London or Key West.

Savannah/Tybee Island

Savannah has an old-world charm and elegance that's impossible to beat. You'll find stately mansions and plenty to do. Nearby, Tybee Island offers spacious vacation rentals with stunning ocean views. Either way, you'll escape the snow and the crowds.

Florida Keys

With an average high of 77 degrees, the Florida Keys make a sunny and warm place to welcome the New Year. Spend the day out on the water and enjoy New Years Eve fireworks on the beach.

Gatlinburg offers lots of fun in the winter. It has Tennessee’s only ski resort, OberGatlinburg Amusement Park and Ski Resort on Mt. Harrison. You’ll enjoy skiing, snowboarding, ice-skating and more.  Be sure to watch the New Year’s Eve ball drop and fireworks.

Lake Tahoe

Try Skiing in Squaw Valley. (Photo: Squaw Valley)
If you live out west, try the Lake Tahoe region for New Year’s Eve. You’ll find an abundance of world-class ski resorts such as Squaw Valley, and lots to do in South Lake Tahoe. Plus, the excitement in Reno, Nevada, is just a short drive away.

If you’re looking for a truly romantic New Year’s Eve, you’re sure to find it in Paris. Paris The Champs-Elysees is the place to be starting at around 9 pm on New Year's Eve. Don't be shy about bringing champagne and plastic flutes to toast the New Year. At midnight, the Eiffel Tower lights up in a dazzling display you'll never forget.

Or, if French isn't your thing, try London on New Year's Eve. Midnightfireworks on the Thames attract a crowd of about 250,000 and you can hear the famous bongs from Big Ben, officially welcoming in the New Year.

Google Flight Search Makes Getting to Your Vacation Rental Easier and Perhaps More Affordable

Online search results for flights continue to get easier, which means getting to your vacation rental is easier. The latest development is Google flight search, which provides real-time flight prices based on your location right within regular search results.

Previously, you had to click into flight search from the Google search page. Now, you can just type in "flights to Orlando" into the normal search page, and you'll get a variety of flight results.

Of course, the flights may or may not be the best prices you can get. Kayak and some of the other sites dedicated to airline bookings might still offer the best deals. Also, many airlines reserve their lowest prices for bookings made within the airline's website. But at the very least, Google flight search can give you an idea what your tickets will cost. It can be a great planning and budgeting tool when planning a trip to vacation rentals, whether it's for a ski trip or fun in the sun.

Be aware that Google often rolls out new tools and features slowly. If Google flight search isn't showing up for you yet, give it time.
